However, I didn't find it as a good way to determine how far and in what direction the offset should be if the alignment is not right. If the ring doesn't slide in loosen BH and adjust. That puts the bellhousing in the right place.

I don't believe that the Browell tool checks for parallelism either (between the trans mounting face of the bell housing and the block mounting face of the BH). Heres the procedure I use. The video is long, but theres a lot of background info etc. They also mention the use of RobbMC alignment dowels, which are my preference as well.
